Summer Camp

Q: How much does Summer Camp cost?

Summer Camp costs $320 per camper. No registration fee, and t-shirts are included.

Q: What are the group sizes?

Although our registration page shows that each week has a group size of 20, we actually divide them into groups of 4-6, depending on their age. They operate throughout the week in their band unit, rehearsing, songwriting, and doing all the other activities. We come together a couple times each day for group activities

Q: When are the camps?

We offer a camp every week in June and July from Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm.

Q: Is there before and after care available?

Yes! Before care is from 7:30am-9pm and costs an additional $125 per week. After care is from 3pm-5pm and costs $160 per week. For both, it’s an additional $260 per week ($25 off), which is a total of $580 including camp fees.

Q: What do they do at camp?

Campers will be divided into bands, pick songs, learn instruments, rehearse the songs to prepare for the Friday gig, receive daily mini-lessons, play musical games inside and outside, as well as receive group masterclass instruction featuring guest musicians and friends of the studio.

Check out the camp registration page for a detailed itinerary, but in short, we want to have fun playing music and making new friends, ideally sparking a musical passion that lasts a lifetime.

Q: Is there a performance Friday evening at Music on Magnolia?

Glad you asked! Yes, there is. Each band will learn a couple songs throughout the week, and we’ll have a casual gig in the backyard Friday evening with all the families. If you’ve got a trip planned Friday, no worries, we’ll make it work.

Q: Is there an early bird special?

Sign up by April 1st and receive our early bird special of $270 ($50 off!).

Q: What ages can attend?

Ages 5 through 18 are encouraged to register. We split them into smaller according to their age.

Q: My child is an absolute beginner, no musical experience. That ok?

Yep! That’s kind of what we’re all about. We’ll let them try a variety of instruments and likely play more than one at the Friday gig.

Q: What instruments will my child play at camp?

Your child might play any of the following instruments: piano, drums, guitar, bass, ukulele, Loog, synthesizer, violin/viola, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, flute, upright bass, organ, melodica… and a few more I’m probably forgetting.

Q: Are they actually going to learn some music reading and such?

We will! For these camps, we focus a lot on rhythms, chords, form, with a basic understanding of note names on piano, guitar, bass. We even teach drum notation, stage presence, and communicating musically with your band.

Q: Your camp teachers...tell me about them.

We use the same Music on Magnolia instructors to lead our camps. They’re the most qualified to teach these camps, which are essentially condensed versions of our semester long concert cycles, giving students opportunities to play a ton of instruments and learn songs they love.

Q: Will you send pictures of my child to me every single day?

Only because you asked. 🙂 We use Pixieset.com to share photos every day from camp, which you can download and share with the grandparents.

Q: How can I sign up?

Nope! We have a ton if instruments here to play, and even some to rent.

Q: Do you rent instruments?

Yes! You can rent instruments for just $25 per month.

Q: What if I don't know which instrument I want to play?

Then your found the perfect place. Each room is full of a variety of instruments, and our instructors can play them all! We’ll help you find the ones that really inspire you.

Q: If I want to try a different instrument, will I have to change my lesson time and instructor?

Bands and Gigs

Q: How does the band thing work?

We carefully select students from our studio that match in age, musical preference, instrumentation, experience, and synergy. If it’s not a perfect fit, we’ll try a different mix the next concert cycle.

Q: Can I/my child be in a band with a friend?

That’s what we’re all about. If you have a friend in the program, or want to join at the same time as a friend, let us know and we’ll make sure to put ya’ll in a band together.

Q: How often are performances?

We host a Classical Recital and The Big Gig every May and December, with 6 weeks of band rehearsals leading up to The Big Gig.

Q: Do I have to perform?

You don’t have to perform if it’s not your goal, or if you just don’t want to. But if you’re just nervous, we’ll help you work through that.

Q: Are there extra fees associated with performing?

The Big Gig experience incurs an additional $140 for the 6 one-hour rehearsals plus gig expenses.

Q: How long do they play at the gig?

Each band plays two songs back to back, getting about 10-15 minutes of stage time at San Antonio’s most popular music venues.
